Support System Design for Extra-Large Cross-Section Diversion Tunnels in Complex Geological Conditions of the Himalayan Region
In alpine canyon hydropower construction, diversion tunnels are commonly used due to their layout simplicity and reliable operation. To expedite the commencement of the main construction, the diversion tunnel must be completed swiftly to enable riverbed closure, ensuring dry construction conditions for the main project. The Dasu Hydropower Station in Pakistan, located in the Himalayan region, employs two extra-large cross-section diversion tunnels on the left bank for construction diversion. The geological conditions along the tunnel axis are complex and variable, with surrounding rock primarily composed of medium to high-strength granulite and gneiss. The support system design for the diversion tunnel capitalizes on the cofferdam's good bearing capacity, applying different support types based on varying geological conditions, resulting in substantial economic and schedule benefits.
