Nantong's Modern Industrial City Construction Practice and Heritage Protection Research
Under the guidance of Zhang Jian's industrial salvation philosophy, the construction practice of Nantong's modern industrial city has achieved remarkable success, earning it the title of"first city in modern China"as argued by Academician Wu Liangyong. In terms of the number of construction projects, education and industry were the most significant, reflecting Zhang Jian's idea of"industry to save the country"and"education to build up the nation."This period also saw the prosperity of commerce, convenient water and land transportation, and smooth trade.Over more than three decades of modem urban construction in Nantong,a large number of projects were initiated, showcasing Zhang Jian's creative contributions to various aspects of urban development. The paper analyzes the urban planning and design philosophy embodied in Nantong's modem industrial city construction practice from four perspectives:the urban-rural spatial pattern of"one city, three towns";the establishment of an industrial chain economy centered around Dasheng Cotton Mill, forming a relatively complete industrial system;the expansion of coastal reclamation and agricultural activities to riverfront and coastal areas, promoting coordinated regional economic development;and connecting with Shanghai and the world, fostering communication between East and West, and embracing openness. Finally, the paper outlines heritage protection strategies for Nantong's modem industrial city, offering practical insights and considerations for the preservation and inheritance of its industrial heritage.
