The Resource Management Act (RMA) was passed in 1991 in New Zealand, which recognized a list of matters of national importance, include ‘outstanding natural features and landscapes’. Under the RMA91, councils have commissioned a large number of regional and district landscape assessments. At the same time, requirements for assessing the overal effects of development at project level were strengthened. Landscape architects play a key role in the assessment process. With the development of landscape assessment, there are a number of common methods and stages of assessment that are widely recognized. Landscape assessment in New Zealand has ensured landscape is sustainably managed and developed.
