Retroactive to the Past:The Knowledge of Koolhaas'Paradigm
The dramatic changes in the general social environment have shifted the disciplinary boundaries of architecture and provoked considerations about a new intellectual paradigm. But instead of looking forward to the future,we should first go back in time and sort out in what ways previous generations responded to change.Using Koolhaas's Epileptic New York as a retrospective blueprint, this paper first identifies the influence of Robert Venturi and Le Corbusier.Second,Koolhaas's detour between"unorthodox"and"orthodox"architecture is analyzed.Ultimately,Koolhaas uses the"needle"and"ball"as urban archetypes, and responds to the changes in contemporary society forming a"new"architecture.
