Interpretation of the Colonial Modernity in Asmara's City Construction
Asmara,the capital of Eritrea in Africa,is currently recognized as an African Modernist City in the World Heritage List.Its current urban landscape not only demonstrates the modern colonial urban planning based on function and racial segregation,but also reflects the local adaptation of modernist urban and architectural theories from the Western world to suit the local geographical environment.This paper re-evaluates the modernist experiment in Asmara by investigating its urban planning background through fieldwork and literature review.Analyzing the distinctive features of Asmara's colonial planning.
