The Organizational System of Structural Timber Components in the Traditional Timber Structure Building of the Regional Craftsman Team in Eastern Qingyuan,Zhejiang
The spatial and component nomenclature system is the basis for craftsmen to understand and construct a building. In traditional timber construction, numerous timber components are connected through mortise and tenon joints. Therefore, craftsmen establish a component positioning system to determine the position of each component.Based on this system, they design the dimensions and joinery methods of the components and differentiate them during fabrication and assembly. This paper summarizes the regional spatial and component nomenclature system and component positioning methods developed by the craftsmen of Eastern Qingyuan through on-site research conducted at construction sites.
