Research on the Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Coastal Commercial Settlements in Ningbo Sea Area During the Song and Yuan Dynasties based on GIS
Influenced by maritime trade,a large number of coastal commercial settlements were spawned in the Ningbo Sea Area during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, constituting an important representative of traditional Chinese coastal settlements, which is of great significance to the understanding of the interaction between the sea and the people in the historical period. However, the academic community has long focused only on individual cases such as Ningbo and Zhoushan in the Ningbo Sea Area, ignoring the importance of the overall coastal commercial settlements to the operational system of maritime trade. With the help of GIS tools, the paper takes the coastal commercial settlements in Ningbo Sea Area of Song and Yuan Dynasties as the research basis, and adopts the methods of line and kernel density analysis to analyse the distribution characteristics of coastal commercial settlements in terms of section, depth and association. The results show that the growth of coastal commercial settlements depended on shoreline zigzagging and water depth, while regionally networked maritime trade was the basis for their survival.
