A Study on the Sacrificial Rites and Music Use of the Confucius Temple of Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty
The sacrificial ceremony in the Confucius Temple is a kind of sacrificial activity for interpre-tating the traditional culture represented by Confucianism and thoughts of the sages represented by Confu-cius.In the activities of sacrificial rites,the ritual and folk music threaded through the whole process of the ceremony.The music is actually composed for the special occasion,with obvious characteristics of the dancing music.In the Qing Dynasty,the two major musical systems in these sacrificial rites are dominant in the other provincial Confucius Temples and those in Qufu of Shandong province.Due to the popularity of the music and the perfection of the program,the sacrificial rites and folk music in the Confucius Tem-ples in the region of Hunan province played an important role in the Chinese musical history.The sacrifi-cial rites and music use of the Confucius Temple of Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty Confucius had the characteristics of the dancing music in contents.It experienced the different stages from rising to fall-ing,that is,choosing,developing,losing and regaining.Though the ancient system of original melody is hard to be traced back,the use of music in sacrificial ceremony had influenced the local music,which formed a good base of the heritage of the music in this area.
