Can Digital Economy Alleviate the Shadow of Urban Agglomeration:Empirical Evidence from Prefecture-Level Cities in China
Based on the theoretical derivation of the extended D-S model, this paper empirically tests the im-pact of digital economy on urban agglomeration shadow by using the intertemporal cross-section model of Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2012 to 2020.The empirical results show that urban agglomeration shadow exists nation-wide,but digital economy weakens the effect of geographical distance, which can alleviate the influence of urban ag-glomeration shadow. In the analysis of regional heterogeneity, urban agglomeration shadow exists in the eastern and western regions, while there is no urban agglomeration shadow in the central and northeast regions. The digital econo-my in the eastern regions weakens the effect of geographic distance and has a mitigating effect on urban agglomeration shadow, while the digital economy in the western regions strengthens the effect of geographic distance and thus intensi-fies the degree of urban agglomeration shadow;there is urban agglomeration shadow in the northern regions, and its digital economy weakens the effect of geographical distance, which has a mitigating effect on urban agglomeration shadow, while there is basically no urban agglomeration shadow in the southern regions. Therefore, the government should increase the investment in relevant infrastructure construction, guide the less developed areas to build new growth poles according to local conditions,so as to alleviate the shadow of urban agglomeration and accelerate the real-ization of the goal of regional coordinated development.
