Due to their limited sources and supply, turquoise objects can provide a unique perspective for studying the cultural exchange and social relationship between different regions during the Shang Dynasty. While these objects were mainly found in the high-rank elite tombs, the types and quality grades of turquoise represent a wide range of variety. The turquoise products in the Lijiaya culture were mainly found at the Zhaigou site, and their types and quality are highly consistent with the central area of the Late Shang Dynasty. In other words, most turquoise products found at the former site are likely to be directly imported from Yinxu. The presence of turquoise products at Zhaigou might reflect the close relationship between the Late Shang Dynasty and communities in northern regions such as those represented by the Lijiaya culture. The connection reflected through turquoises may also have corresponded to the eastward spread of chariot and horse resources from the Eurasian and the northward of the Shang Dynasty influence. The author suggests that the Late Shang Dynasty may have obtained necessary resources from their surrounding areas through the control of prestige materials such as turquoise and production technology.
