Abstract
The double-bellied pottery of the Late Yangshao era on the Loess Plateau went through two major developmental phases.About 5300 or 5200 years ago,the double-bellied pots originated inthe western Guanzhong area, and then expanded eastward to the eastern Guanzhong and southern Shanxi areas, northward to southern Ningxia, and westward to central Gansu.During this period, the double-bellied basins also spread to the Qujialing culture area and became an important source of double-bellied stylized pottery there. In the second phase of Late Yangshao era,the double-bellied dou stemmed plate of the Qujialing culture dissimilated on the reverse direction to the Loess Plateau region. The junction of Shaanxi,Shanxi and Henan provinces became the central distribution region of double-bellied pottery. As late as 4500 years ago,double-bellied pottery disappeared from the Loess Plateau. The double-bellied pottery in this region was mainly used as daily food serving vessels,or played a role in rituals. Its rise and fall to some extent reflected the social and cultural development and changes of the Late Yangshao era on the Loess Plateau.
