Jokhang Temple and Sangye Temple, which are the two most important Buddhist monasteries during the Tubo period, were described and studied by famous archaeologist Bai Su when he investigated the Buddhist temples in the Lhasa and Shannan regions in Tibet. The two monasteries have very different layouts:the former consists mainly of monk houses, whereas the latter is primarily a Buddhist hall.Although both were originated from India, they reflect the different design concepts of Buddhist temples in the Tubo period. In particular, the type of the Sangye Temple not only became the model of royal Buddhist temples in the Tubo period, but also affected the overall arrangement of Buddhist temples in later eras.
