An archaeological reconnaissance jointly conducted by the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology and Xi'an Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics Conservation and Archaeological Research at the Nan Mausoleum has identified an upside-down bucket-shape tumulus,a ya-shaped underground tomb pit,and a surface paved with river pebbles within the mausoleum park.In addition,the reconnaissance has also identified 20 waicanguo external burial goods pits,4 architectural sites,and 381 animal sacrificial pits.The Nanling Mausoleum is unique as the only independent mausoleum granted to an empress dowager in the Western Han Dynasty.The shape and layout of the mausoleum provide significant academic value for the study of the mausoleum system during the Western Han Dynasty.
