In January and April 2021,the Department of Archaeology at Shanxi University conducted two surveys of the cliff statues at Zaolinzhuang and Liuwan villages, respectively,in Qinyuan,Changzhi,Shanxi. The Zaolinzhuang cliff carvings include three niches featuring donor images and inscriptions. The style and theme suggest that these carvings were created in the late Northern Wei Dynasty. The Liuwan cliff carvings contain twelve niches, even though they have suffered severe weathering. The style and theme indicate that they were built during the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties. These cliff statues provide valuable information for studying the chronological sequence of Buddhism in the Northern Dynasties and the transmission routes of Buddhism in southeastern Shanxi Province.
