This article conducted a typological analysis of tombs and related artifacts dating to the Northern Dynasties in the Beijing area. The author proposes that these tombs can be divided into three phases:the period of the Northern Wei Dynasty after its occupation of Beijing but before its relocation to Luoyang, the period of the Northern Wei after the relocation of the capital to Luoyang and the Eastern Wei Dynasty, and the Northern Qi period. Moreover, the cultural characteristics of the Han and Jin periods are very different from those during the Northern Dynasties. Thus, the reshaping of funeral practices might have initiated the more diverse funeral practices during the Sui-Tang period, and played a critical role in bridging these two cultural eras.
