Abstract

A set of Shang Dynasty chime bells excavated from Yinxu is documented in the Shuang Jian Yi Guqiwu Tulu(双剑誃古器物图录)compiled by Yu Xingwu. This chime bell set includes three stone chimes, each inscribed with musical terminology. The first stone chime bears the inscriptions'yong qi'(永启),where'yong'(永)is interpreted as'yong'(詠),meaning'to sing',and'qi'(启)signifies the beginning of a musical performance. Thus,'yong qi'(詠启)refers to the commencement of singing. The second stone chime is inscribed with'yong yu'(永俞),where'yu'(俞)is read as'yu'(歈),denoting a type of song.Together,'yong yu'(詠歈)refers to singing a musical piece. The third stone chime features the inscription'zouyu'(走俞),where'zou'(走)is interpreted as'zou'(奏),meaning'to play'.Therefore,'zouyu'(奏歈)refers to the act of performing music.
