The Implementation Impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on Urban Innovation Efficiency and Its Spatial Spillover Effects
The purpose is to evaluate the Implementation effect of the the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)initiative on improving innovation efficiency,and explore the path and mechanism to improve innovation efficiency on this basis.The inception of the BRI heralds a new era of economic diplomacy and international cooperation.With the objective of fortifying China's trade and investment links across Asia,Europe,and beyond,the initiative has the potential to redefine global trade routes and economic landscapes.This study is motivated by the imperative to understand the BRI's ramifications on urban innovation-a critical driver of economic vitality and competitiveness.By scrutinizing the initiative's Implementation effects on innovation efficiency,the research endeavors to illuminate the mechanisms through which the BRI catalyzes economic dynamism and to assess its broader implications for urban development strategies.The backdrop of this inquiry is the burgeoning discourse on globalization and regional development,where the BRI stands as a monumental endeavor with far-reaching consequences for participating cities and countries.This article is based on panel data of 284 prefecture-level cities in China from 1991 to 2020,and establishes a spatial panel double difference model to study the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on innovation efficiency and its spillover effects.The main conclusions of the article are as follows:(1)Implementation of the The Belt and Road Initiative can significantly improve the innovation efficiency of node cities,and the driving effect of the initiative on innovation in node cities is significant until 2020.(2)Implementation of the The Belt and Road Initiative has a significant spillover effect on the improvement of innovation efficiency in cities within 100 kilometers of node cities,and there is a distance decay effect.(3)The Implementation impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on innovation efficiency is partly achieved by improving the level of foreign trade.(4)The impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on innovation varies in different regions.From the perspective of direct effects,the impact of the initiative is positive in all three regions,and the largest in the western region and the smallest in the eastern region;from the perspective of spillover effects,the spillover effect of the initiative is negative in the western region,and positive in both eastern and central regions.Based on these conclusions,the article puts forward some policy suggestions.
