The Impact Mechanism of Digital Economy on the High-Quality Economic Development of Underdeveloped Urban Areas:An Analysis Based on the Mediating Role of Technological Innovation
Cities in underdeveloped areas are seeking various solutions to stimulate the dividend effect of digital economy on economic growth.To explore the empowering role and impact mechanism of the development of digital economy on the high-quality economic development of cities in underdeveloped regions,an indicator system for digital economy and high-quality economic development at the urban level is constructed based on the connotation of digital economy and high-quality economic development.Using the entropy method to calculate relevant indices,a two-way fixed effects model is applied to analyze panel data of 14 cities in Guangxi from 2012 to 2021.Additionally,an individual and time two-way fixed effects model is used to test the mediating effect of technological innovation.Empirical results indicate that digital economy and high-quality economic development of cities in underdeveloped areas is steadily increasing,but problems of imbalanced and insufficient development persist,and the digital economy significantly promotes the high-quality economic development.Besides,factors such as the degree of government intervention,industrial structure level,higher education,and rising urbanization rate can effectively enhance the high-quality economic development of these cities.In addition,technological innovation plays an crucial intermediary role in the process of the digital economy advancing high-quality economic development of cities in underdeveloped areas.From these conclusions,policy suggestions are proposed,including implementing differentiation strategies,promoting the digital transformation and upgrading of traditional industries,and so on,to promote the high-quality economic development of cities in underdeveloped regions.
