Factor marketization reform is the inevitable requirement for the high quality development of our economy. This paper examines impact of hukou reform on the allocation of labor resources. The results show that the stickiness of labor cost decreases significantly after the household registration system reform, and the increased spatial mobility of labor force is underlying mechanism. The results of cross-sectional tests show that the treatment effect of hukou reform is more pronounced when the profit-seeking motive of labor force is strong and the proportion of lower-level labor force is relatively high. Finally, this paper finds that the hukou reform can improve the profitability and market value. These findings are helpful to expand the research on labor mobility and growth in the process of economic transition, and also have important implications for understanding the transmission mechanism of market-o-riented allocation of factors to promote high-quality economic development.
