Recent advances in the role of peripheral nerves in periodontitis
Periodontitis was defined as chronic inflammatory disease in periodontal tissues initialed by dental bacterial plaque.And there were peripheral nerve terminals extensively distributed in periodontium,including autonomic nerve terminals and sensory nerve terminals.Recent evidences indicated that periodontal peripheral nerves played a significant role in periodontitis,regulating alveolar bone remodeling and periodontal immune microenvironment.This article reviewed the periodontal distribution of peripheral nerves and the role of peripheral nerves in periodontitis.
