Comparative analysis of demography characteristics and clinical indications of adult orthodontic patients with different appli-ances in Shanxi region
Objective:To compare and analyze the general demography characteristics and clinical indications of adult orthodontic patients who choose different orthodontic devices, and help patients to choose appropriate orthodontic devices.Method:180 adult or-thodontic patients were divided into 2 groups:invisible appliances group(122)and fixed appliances group(58).Intraoral photos,or-thodontic storage models and X-ray films before treatment were collected. The classification of malocclusion, sagittal bone surface clas-sification,profile type, decayed missing filled tooth, gingival index, and plaque index were evaluated. The general demography charac-teristics and clinical indications of 2 groups were analyzed and compared. Results:The patients in the invisible appliance group were older and had a higher family income than those in the fixed appliance group(P<0.05).There were more patients coming from other areas in the invisible appliance group. There was statistical significance between the 2 groups(P<0.05).The proportion of classifica-tion of malocclusion and sagittal skeletal relationship between the 2 groups is similar, and there is no statistical significance between the 2 groups(P>0.05).In the profile assessment, patients in the fixed appliance group exhibited a more prominent lower lip.The average DMFT of the 2 groups was 2.6 and the fixed appliance group was higher(P<0.05).Among the variables included in the DMFT evalua-tion,only the number of decayed teeth was higher in the fixed appliance group, other variables were not statistically significant(P>0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in gingival index and plaque index between the 2 groups(P>0.05).Conclu-sions:Compared with patients who choose fixed appliances, those patients from Shanxi region who are older, who have a permanent residence in another city,or those who have a higher family income, tend to choose invisible appliances.Compared with patients who choosed invisible appliances, patients who choose fixed appliances have a more prominent lower lip, poor profile, and more decayed teeth. In clinical practice, orthodontists can help patients to choose the most suitable orthodontic device based on these characteristics.
