The role of reactive oxygen species and mitophagy in periodontitis
The imbalance between reactive oxygen species(ROS)and antioxidant defense system is one of the important causes of periodontitis.Mitophagy is the mechanism in which the body scavenges damaged mitochondria to maintain its quantity and quality.Ele-vated levels of ROS will lead to mitophagy, which can promote cell death or prevent its apoptosis, and eliminate ROS at the same time. This article reviews the role of ROS and mitophagy in periodontitis and the relationship between them.
