Objective To measure and analyze the maxillary and mandibular canines and alveolar bone morphology in adults with different sagittal skeletal patterns using cone beam computed-tomography scan. Methods Ninety-one adults[age(20.84±1.77)years old]who met the inclusion criteria were selected.Cone beam CT images were stored in DICOM format for three-dimensional reconstruction analysis.According to ANB angle, they were divided into three groups(Class Ⅰ 0°≤ANB≤5°,31 cases;Class Ⅱ ANB>5°,30 cases;Class Ⅲ ANB<0°,30 cases). The inter-root distance of maxillary and mandibular canines was measured at the apical point, apical 1/4,middle 1/2 and cervical 1/4 levels. The distance from enamel-cemental junction to alveolar crest was measured. Results ① The labial alveolar bone thickness at the apical point of maxillary canine with Class Ⅱ[(1.79±0.84)mm]was less than that in Class Ⅲ[(2.40±0.92)mm],with a significant difference(P<0.05).② The lingual alveolar bone thickness at the apical point of the maxillary canine in ClassⅡ[(9.77±1.93)mm]was greater than that in Class Ⅲ[(8.41±1.68)mm],with a significant difference(P<0.05).The lingual alveolar bone thickness at the apical 1/4 of maxillary canine in Class Ⅱ[(6.4±1.89)mm]was greater than that in Class Ⅲ[(5.17±1.60)mm],with a significant difference(P<0.05).③ The labial alveolar bone thickness of maxillary and mandibular canines was less than lingual alveolar bone in a single cross section, not affected by sagittal skeletal pattern, and the difference was significant(P<0.01).④ The thicknesses of maxillary canine labial alveolar bone at the apical 1/4[(0.51±0.50)mm]and middle 1/2[(0.51±0.45)mm]cross section were less than in the other two sections. The thickness of maxillary canine lingual alveolar bone at cervical 1/4 cross section[(1.48±0.73)mm]was less than in the other three sections. The thickness of mandibular canine labial alveolar bone at middle 1/2 cross section[(0.37±0.34)mm]was less than in the other three sections. The thickness of mandibular canine lingual alveolar bone at the cervical 1/4 cross section[(0.95±0.53)mm]was less than the other three sections, the difference was significant(P<0.01).Conclusions The proximity of the maxillary and mandibular canine root position to the labial alveolar bone is not affected by sagittal skeletal pattern. The sagittal skeletal pattern influences the alveolar bone thickness of maxillary canine near the apical point. The maxillary and mandibular canine alveolar bone in the middle part of the root on the labial side and the cervical part of the root on the lingual side is thin.
