Metallogenic regularity and prospecting direction of cobalt deposits in Yunnan Province
Cobalt is a scarce strategic metal and is widely used in emerging industries.Due to the unique chemical properties of cobalt, there are mostly cobalt co-associated deposits, with little independent cobalt deposits. At present, cobalt deposits in Yunnan Province are characterized by numerous mineral occurrences in wide areas with limited cobalt resource quantities, resulting in a serious shortage of retained cobalt resource.Based on analyzing typical ore deposits in this paper,we have systematically summarized geological characteristics and mineralization regularities of cobalt deposits(occurrents)in Yunnan Province. There are three main types of cobalt deposits(occurrences)in Yunnan Province. They include medium to low temperature hydrothermal type, sedimentary metamorphic type, and weathering type.Among them, the medium to low temperature hydrothermal type and sedimentary metamorphic type cobalt deposits are dominant. The medium to low temperature hydrothermal deposits were mainly formed in the Paleogene and distributed in the Lanping-Pu'er metallogenic belt on the east side of the Lancangjiang fault zone; The sedimentary metamorphic deposits were mainly formed in the Middle Proterozoic and distributed in the central Yunnan metallogenic belt of the Kunyang Rift on the western margin of the Yangtze Block. On the basis of extensive field investigations and indoor comprehensive researches, five mineral exploration targeting areas, including the Weixi-Yongping area,Bailongchang-Daqing area,Mangnai-Jinghong area,Yimen-Yuanjiang area, and Huize-Fuyuan area, have been outlined.Especially, exploration prospects of the Weixi-Yongping area and Yimen-Yuanjiang area have good potential for finding medium-sized cobalt deposits. They are recommended to be key areas of priority deployment for exploring cobalt resource in Yunnan Province.
