Markov Blanket Reconstitution of the Bounds of Cognition——A Multiscale Integrationist Stance
The problem of the bounds of cognition is one of the difficulties in current cognitive science research.Previous research on this issue mainly involves the debate between the two opposing views of internalism and exter-nalism.Although they tend to reconcile to a certain extent in the later stages, there are still insuperable theoretical dilemmas. The newly emerging theory of predictive processing provides a new way of thinking about the problem of the bounds of cognition. In the framework of predictive cognition, based on the variational free energy principle and the concept of Markov blanket,we can transcend the philosophical debate between internalist and externalist expla-nations in a certain sense, and give a new interpretation of the bounds of cognition of self-organizing biological systems from a compromising and integrationist standpoint.
