The Exploration and Construction of Modernity in China by Modern Chinese Intellectuals——Based on an Examination to the Path of Zhao Yuanren's Translation of Western Learning
Since modern times,the translation of Western learning led by Chinese modern intellectuals had not only imported new concepts and knowledge into China,but also generated a great impact on people of that time from the form and usage of language to the cultivation and evolution of character.This had contributed to the emergence of the'modernity'by western civilization in China in the 19th century.During that period,Zhao Yuanren,as the representative of Chinese modern intellectuals,had worked with them to pave a way for constructing'modernity'in China from the form of language,to the way of thinking,and further to the nature of personality by reforming lan-guage,introducing science,and cultivating a sense of aesthetics through the channel of the translation of Western learning.Besides that,he also played an important role in the emergence and evolution of 'modernity' in China.Exploring the origin of modern intellectuals'spontaneous exploration and construction of 'modernity' in China by the process of 'Western learning to the East' is an important way to understand the current path led by China to achieve modernization.It is also a historical inquiry into the unfinished undertakings of 'modernity' and a realistic concern for the exploration and construction of 'modernity' in China.
