Dissociative Phenomenon and"the Causal Closure of the Physical"
Any version of physicalism is committed to the principle of"causal closure of the physical"to the effect that any physical event which has physical causes has sufficient physical causes. It is argued that this principle is contradicted by certain empirical phenomenon.Writing during dissociative state is an intentional behavior.Neuro-imaging research on writing under dissociative trance state indicates that such behaviors seem to lack sufficient neu-rophysiological causes, which implies that there may exist some physical events that do not have sufficient physical(namely fundamentally non-intentional)causes.Furthermore,this paper argues that specific version of panpsy-chism(cosmopsychism)that may furnish a metaphysical interpretation for such phenomena may be taken as an al-ternative to physicalism.
