As an emerging technological science with the most subversive and intersecting characteristics in the 21st century, synthetic biology poses philosophical challenges,i.e.,at the ontological level, synthetic life is considered to break the boundary between artificial and nature, life and machine;at the epistemological level, the"Build life to understand it"of synthetic biology is considered to subvert the traditional scientific epistemology;at the methodo-logical level, the integration of science, technology and engineering has accelerated the growth and application of scientific knowledge and is considered to have achieved a paradigm shift in biology. However, the view of the chal-lenge is difficult to be supported by scientific facts and rational analysis:at the ontological level, the current syn-thetic life is still essentially a copy of natural life, and it is difficult to determine the ontology of future synthetic life based on the dichotomy of artificial and natural, life and machine;at the epistemological level,"Build life to un-derstand it"does not break away from the traditional epistemological basis, but expands the way to acquire new life knowledge;at the methodological level, the engineering paradigm has not replaced the physical paradigm in syn-thetic biology, and the integration of the two paradigms is more in line with the reality and requirements of the cur-rent and future development of life science.
