Theory of North America Ecological Marxism from the Perspective of Historical Materialism
Facing the increasingly severe ecological crisis in developed capitalism,North American scholars such as William Leiss,Ben Agger,James O'Connor, and John Foster have drawn upon and"rethought"or"reconstruc-ted"the relationship between humans and nature from the view of historical materialism.Based on this, they regard the increasingly severe ecological crisis as the primary crisis that has transcended economic crisis in the contempora-ry society. In the context of a deep analysis on the capital logic and the tension of natural environment, they clarify that ecological crisis is an inevitable product of capitalism, and further point out the dominant position and struggle strategies of the working class in the ecological socialism movement, thus constructing the unique theory of North A-merica Ecological Marxism. The theory has an important theoretical significance for a correct understanding of the current capitalism economic crisis.Due to its deviation from the principle of intrinsic necessity of social basic con-tradiction and crisis in historical materialism, the theory has distinct theoretical defects.
