The Phenomenological Origin of Tertiary Retention and Its Significance for Philosophy of Technology
Tertiary retention is the core concept coined by Bernard Stiegler, offering a unique perspective for under-standing technology."Retention"originates from Edmund Husserl's phenomenology of the consciousness of inter-nal time, meaning that urimpression is retained in the present moment in the form of variation. In The Origin of Ge-ometry,Husserl temporarily moved away from the principle of subjectivity and turned his attention to history and tradition.Based on that,Stiegler proposed"tertiary retention",which refers to the externalized, objective, and materialized memory.Contrary to Husserl,Stiegler insisted that the tertiary retention is constitutive.Considering technology as tertiary retention implies that technology is not just a tool, but it constitutes Dasein.
