Academic Contribution and Global Impact of China's Political Science Research
One of the most frequently discussed themes among Chinese political scientists is the positioning of politi-cal science with Chinese features manifested in discipline, scholarship, and discourse systems. To achieve this goal,Chi-nese scholars must both research China-based big questions while promoting its global influence.Using multiple data sources, this paper adopts the international academic discourse model of the 5 Ws(i.e.,"Who speaks-What content-to Whom-by Which-How effective")to investigate the international contribution and impact of Chi-na's political science research from the aspects of research team, investigated topics, international cooperation, knowledge diffusion, and others. The study identifies five major Chinese political science topics that have received significant atten-tion from the international academic community. The analysis shows that over the past 40 years,China has made remarkable strides on the global stage of political science research. This is evidenced by the steady expansion of Chinese institutions participating in and leading international publications and the increasing diversification of both research content and geographic scope of influence.Yet,there is still much room for improvement in increasing the con-tribution and influence of Chinese political science research.Compared with other fields in the social sciences,China's political science research has had relatively low international visibility and experienced sluggish growth. It also suffers from constraints, such as the lack of high-impact scholars and journal gatekeepers. This study also reveals an unbalanced distribution of research strength within the Chinese political science communi-ty.The top 10 most productive universities account for 56%of all China's political science research.Three higher educa-tion institutions outperformed all other universities in mainland China, but the gap has been closing over the last decade. This finding remains consistent for the four methods of whole counting,first-author counting,corresponding-author counting,as well as fractional counting. This study argues that the academic contribution and global impact of Chinese political science research reflects the status quo and dynamics of the development of Chinese social sciences in general. In the future, the construction of the three major systems of political science with Chinese characteristics should be based upon critical borrowing and incorpo-ration of Western political science theories, focusing on the new developments and changes in Chinese society and the global landscape in the new era,and strengthening the theoretical research and practical summarization of the"real prob-lems"of political science.
