Capability Enhancement Mechanism of Manufacturing Enterprises in Service-Oriented Innovation Process:A Comparative Case Study from the Ambidextrous Innovation Perspective
Innovation is an important means to cultivate and enhance enterprise capability. At present, how to en-hance the servitization capability of manufacturing enterprises through product technology innovation and service innova-tion is a hot issue of concern by the industry and academia. In this process, manufacturing enterprises often need to bal-ance the exploration and exploitation of technologies and services to respond to short-term survival pressure and pursue long-term outstanding development. In particular, for a large number of late-developing manufacturing enterprises, the lack of key technical capabilities and insufficient product support in the early stage of service transformation, how to effec-tively manage technology innovation and service innovation activities, and promote the joint improvement of enterprise technical capabilities and service capabilities, this question has become more important. However, the existing research has not given a good answer to this practical problem. This paper takes the ambidextrous innovation theory as the perspective and adopts the case study method to discuss the ambidextrous innovation strategy in the service-oriented transformation process of China's late-developing manufac-turing enterprises, and reveals the internal mechanism of enterprise servitization capability improvement.Findings:There are four innovation matching patterns in the process of servitization transformation of China's late-developing manufac-turing enterprises, which constitute a two-dimension 2*2 innovation matrix of"technology/service--exploration/exploita-tion".And based on the different times when enterprises perceive the dynamic changes in the technology/service innova-tion environment,a differentiated servitization innovation path of"Double exploitative innovation-Service leverage innova-tion or Technology leverage innovation-Double exploratory innovation"is formed to achieve the discontinuous ambidex-trous balance of technology or service in the same field and the cross-domain Structural ambidextrous balance of technolo-gy and service,so as to promote the upgrading of enterprises'servitization capability. This paper systematically studies the servitization innovation process of China's late-developing manufacturing enter-prises and the general law of its internal technology and service capability improvement. From a dynamic perspective, this study reveals the inherent law of dynamic evolution that the late-developing manufacturing enterprises in emerging coun-tries can achieve mutual support and common development of technology and service capabilities through the balance of exploration innovation and exploitation innovation of technology/service.The findings of this study are in response to the appeal of the existing research to explore the transformational dynamics of exploration innovation and exploitation innova-tion and the hybrid ambidextrous research. Moreover, the research situation of servitization is enriched, which can provide reference for late-developing manufacturing enterprises to avoid servitization paradox and implement servitization innova-tion strategic decision.
