Will Digital Platform Capabilities Definitely Help Enterprises'Strategic Entrepreneurship?
In the era of the digital economy,enterprises realize that the process of digital transformation is a crucial means of creating value.For example,many enterprises attempt to build an open digital platform to enhance their digital platform capabilities,aiding them in gaining strategic entrepreneurial advantages in the digital economy era.However,de-spite some enterprises possessing high digital platform capabilities,they may lack proficiency in strategic entrepreneurial ac-tivities such as identifying opportunities and embedding resources.Currently,two significant gaps exist in the literature re-garding the relationship between digital platform capabilities and strategic entrepreneurship.Firstly,most studies exclusively discuss how digital platform capabilities may enable enterprises to attain opportunity performance by enhancing their net-work capability,organizational readiness,and knowledge base.However,rare discussions address when these capabilities might weaken or even alter their positive effects.Secondly,while many studies delve into the"process to output"mechanism in the theory of strategic entrepreneurship,the discussion on the key pre-mechanism of"input-process"remains insufficient.Numerous enterprise cases suggest that the impact of strategic entrepreneurship based on a digital platform is likely in-fluenced by market and technological disturbances.However,empirical evidence confirming the effect and mechanism of digital platform capabilities on strategic entrepreneurship under such disturbances is lacking.Considering the practical needs of enterprises engaging in strategic entrepreneurship based on digital platform capabilities and the absence of conclusive evi-dence regarding when the capabilities will or will not facilitate strategic entrepreneurship,this paper seeks to clarify the theo-retical conditions and mechanisms influencing the relationship between digital platform capabilities and strategic entrepre-neurship based on strategic entrepreneurship theory.The main effect of digital platform capabilities on strategic entrepreneur-ship is first discussed,followed by an exploration of the mediating effect of strategic information flow and strategic informa-tion quality.Lastly,the moderating effects of market turbulence and technology turbulence are examined.Empirical analysis of data from 251 firms in China reveals that digital platform capabilities can effectively drive enterprises'strategic entrepre-neurship,primarily by enhancing strategic information flow and quality,with the improvement of strategic information quali-ty being a more effective method.Furthermore,compared with low market turbulence,digital platform capabilities can drive strategic entrepreneurship by enhancing strategic information flow and quality under high market turbulence,but it exhibits no significant driving effect under low market turbulence.Similarly,compared with low(high)technology turbulence,digi-tal platform capabilities can drive strategic entrepreneurship through strategic information flow and strategic information quality under medium technology turbulence.However,its driving effect under low(high)technology turbulence is not as pronounced.The research conclusion has the following theoretical contributions:First,this paper puts forward the theo-retical viewpoint that digital platform capabilities may not necessarily drive strategic entrepreneurship,and identifies the theoretical boundary conditions for digital platform capabilities to drive strategic entrepreneurship.Secondly,on the basis of verifying the theory of strategic entrepreneurship,this paper refines the"input-process"mechanism in the theoretical frame-work(input-process-output)and enriches the theory of strategic entrepreneurship.The research conclusions have the fol-lowing practical implications:First,enterprises are encouraged to attach importance to the construction of digital platforms and strive to improve the capabilities of digital platforms to support enterprises'innovation and entrepreneurship.Second,enterprises must always pay attention to the external market and technological trends and dynamically adjust their strategic decisions.Third,enterprises should increase the acquisition and utilization of external strategic information,and pay more at-tention to quality while paying attention to quantity.
