Overall Design,or Natural Increase?Research on the Antecedent Configuration Evolution of Resource Orchestration Direction In Enterprises'Digital Transformation
Whether to follow the top-down overall design or bottom-up natural growth logic to drive enterprises'digital transformation has always been one of the core issues in Chinese enterprises'digital transformation practice. The digital transformation is when enterprises use digital resource action to build and collaborate the multi-dimensional digital capabilities of the organization. The resource orchestration theory explores directional strategies such as"top-down,""bot-tom-up,"and"bidirectional flow"in organizing actions from the perspective of organizational behavior, along with their driving factors. It provides a unique theoretical perspective for gaining insight into the directional strategies of organiza-tional digital transformation. The theory of resource orchestration helps to reveal the processes of synergy and coupling among multi-dimensional digital capabilities. It discovers whether organizations choose top-down design or bottom-up natural growth strategy decision logic, which can promote the construction and synergy among multi-dimensional digital capabilities, achieving high performance in digital transformation.Constrained by the homogeneous linear and harmonious coupling assumptions of existing research on multi-dimensional digital capabilities, they failed to fully reveal the non-linear development phenomena of multi-dimensional digital capabilities in conflicts.Additionally, research methods based on symmetric causal variable relationships also cannot effectively explain the reasons and mechanisms for differential development paths under the coexistence of multiple causal dependencies, nor do they fully reveal the evolution and pat-terns of resource action direction strategies in long cycles. This study uses the EOA analysis framework(E-environment,O-organization,A-attention),employs the qualitative comparative analysis based on the time series(TSQCA)method, and selects 96 enterprises with different stages of digital transformation in Zhejiang Province as an example. The research find that firstly single factors are not necessary for high performance in digital transformation.A combination of multiple ante-cedents,including environment, organization, and attention, contributes to diverse configurations for high performance in digital transformation. There are multiple performance paths(high and low)with non-symmetrical relationships across the stages of digital transformation, characterized by a"different paths, same destination"pattern.Secondly, observations across the transformation stages reveal a pattern in the alternating changes between core, marginal, and irrelevant condi-tions for each antecedent:Environmental turbulence in the early stages of transformation acts as a trigger and driver for initiating organizational digital transformation. As the transformation progresses to higher stages, high market turbulence becomes a core factor. The organizational antecedent serves as a core condition in the early stages, but its influence gradually weakens over time. The attention antecedent,on the other hand, exhibits a trend of evolution from high spe-cialization to high integration.Thirdly, the combination formed by the two dimensions of specialization and integration in the attention structure constitutes the strategic direction for organizational orchestration actions.During the three stages of transformation, there is an evolutionary trend of differentiation from a"bottom-up"natural growth mode in the digital subordinate stage to a dual-direction split of a"top-down"planning mode and a"bottom-up"growth mode in the digital alignment stage, and finally to a convergence of a"bidirectional flow"in the digital-driven stage.
