Research on the Influence Mechanism of Competitive Network Scale on Business Model Spin-off:A Moderated Mediation Model
Business model spin-off has become an important way for enterprises to shape their competitive advantage in the new competitive pattern, but existing research has not yet developed a clear understanding of its influencing factors and occurrence mechanism. In the context of networked competitive relationships, members of competitive network can directly or indirectly provide reference information for enterprises'business model spin-off decisions and behaviors,espe-cially in larger-scale competitive network, where enterprises are able to discover and obtain multi-channel and multi-type information related to business model spin-off,which is conducive to the further enhancement of their business model spin-off capabilities.Although competitive network scale may have an important impact on business model spin-offs car-ried out by enterprises in dynamic market environments, issues such as what specific mechanisms exist between them and whether the relationship between them is affected by the specific context of the enterprise still need to be explored in depth. The research constructs a moderated mediation model based on social network theory and the attention-based view to explore the impact of competitive network scale on business model spin-off,and analyzes the mediating and moderating roles played by TM attention allocation and slack resource.Sample data from 218 enterprises were collected through ques-tionnaires and the research hypotheses were tested using multiple hierarchical regression and Bootstrap methods. The fol-lowing conclusions were drawn from the research:First, the competitive network is an important factor driving the busi-ness model spin-off of enterprises, and the influence effect will be enhanced with the expansion of competitive network scale.Second,TM attention allocation partially mediates the relationship between competitive network scale and business model spin-offs,allowing executives to acquire new and more diverse knowledge and information when they deal with mul-tiple attention goals and to drive business model spin-offs by reorganizing this knowledge and information.Third, slack resource reinforces the positive relationship between TM attention allocation and business model spin-offs,and also strengthens the indirect effect of competitive network scale on business model spin-offs through TM attention allocation.Compared with regular business model innovation, business model spin-off usually requires cross-border business, which ex-poses enterprises to more risks and uncertainties, and thus puts higher demands on the level of enterprises'resource capacity. The research results have the following implications for enterprises:First, enterprises can use various ways to learn and obtain key information from competitive network, such as paying close attention to media information, strengthening inter-firm visits, analyzing industry reports from trade associations or independent research institutes, and participating in technology or product expositions.Second, enterprises should equip business model spin-off tasks with managers who have a diffuse attention model, and develop and strengthen managers'ability to focus on multiple attention goals.Third, enterprises should maintain a level of slack resource in their daily operations to ensure that they are able to meet their re-source needs in the event of major changes. And when responding to environmental changes and market competition, managers should accurately identify and reasonably deploy available slack resource and quickly put it into business model spin-off activities to realize the transformation of corporate resource to spin-off advantages.Future research can,on the one hand, adopt other research methods, such as case analysis and grounded theory,to more deeply depict the competitive landscape of enterprises and then study its impact on business model spin-off;on the other hand,it can select other ante-cedent factors that may affect business model spin-off from different perspectives, thus revealing the influencing factors and the mechanism of the business model spin-off in a more comprehensive way.
