Path to the Leading Position of Chinese Enterprises Driven by the Sense of Vigilance:Based on a Double Case Study of Haier and Huawei
In recent years,the global influence of Chinese enterprises has rapidly increased,giving rise to a number of world-renowned companies that lead their respective industries.The management wisdom and leadership style of Chinese entrepreneurs have also garnered more attention.The sense of vigilance,as an important concept in traditional Chinese cul-ture and an embedded driving force of the Chinese national spirit,has an undeniable impact on the strategic behavior of en-terprises in the Chinese context.However,there is a lack of research on the specific manifestations of the sense of vigilance within enterprises and how it drives the path from following to leading.Refining the essence of excellent traditional Chinese culture,summarizing the driving mechanism of the Chinese national cultural genes rooted in the hearts of entrepreneurs for the innovative development of enterprises,and deeply interpreting the characteristics of the Confucian merchant spirit in business practice,explaining the transformation and development of Confucian economic philosophy and market economic practice,and theoretically attempting to overturn Weber's conclusion that the intrinsic spirit of Confucian culture is contrary to the modern market economy,all hold significant value and meaning for the comprehensive advancement of Chinese-style modernization.Focusing on the sense of vigilance as a specific model of organizational vigilance that integrates the essence of Chinese philosophical management,Huawei Technologies Co.,Ltd.and Haier Group are selected as case study objects.By ob-servingthe true performance of the leaders'sense of vigilance in both companies in details,following the interpretivist case study specification,and comparing the different patterns of sense of vigilance,corporate culture,strategic behavior,and com-petitive advantage between the two companies,the connotation of the concept of sense of vigilance is deepened.It is concluded how different sense of vigilance differentially drive the transformation of enterprises from following to leading positions,thereby filling the theoretical gaps in the business community regarding the mechanism of the role of the sense of vigilance and the transformation from following to taking the lead.Conclusions:(1)The sense of vigilance normally revolves around a certain central idea aimed at oneself,extending to the cognitive level at the forefront of daily business,manifesting as an awareness among corporate leaders and employees to be vigilant about changes in internal and external affairs at all time and to think about how to respond,and at the behavioral level,it triggers proactive strategic changes,organizational management mechanism changes,and other corporate behaviors,manifesting as adjustments or transformations made by enterprises in response to expected development trends before envi-ronmental changes or at the bud stage of changes.(2)The sense of vigilance of corporate leaders can drive the enterprise through guiding corporate culture and affecting organizational strategic behavior,obtaining competitive advantages.Through the conscious emphasis and implementation by leaders,enterprises can establish a matching communication and feedback mechanism according to their specific thinking patterns,linking external changes with internal transformations,enabling en-terprises to maintain a sense of crisis and mission at all times,thereby integrating the sense of vigilance into corporate cul-ture,affecting the goals,ways of thinking,methods of working,and attitudes of corporate employees.The awareness of po-tential dangers can also affect organizational strategic behavior by influencing the basic tone of corporate behavior and deter-mining the timing and style of corporate changes.The sense of vigilance determines the different perspectives enterprises adopt when dealing with the relationship between the environment and strategic renewal and organizational change,ultimate-ly achieving an asymmetric dynamic balance of different paths,and completing the transformation from following to leading during the process of achieving balance.
