摘要
明恩溥作为一位来华传教士,在宣教时对中国文化有诸多研究.在他看来,中国文化的特性是由儒家塑造的,故分析儒家基本观念可以反映中国文化的特性.他通过分析当时中国人所具"仁""礼""智""信""义"之思想特质,勾勒出中国文化的"大致轮廓",进而提出改造中国文化的"药方"——以基督教文明帮助有着"举世无双的过去"的中国人"纠错改正",以创造一个"美好的未来".明恩溥的思想虽然基于基督教立场且有特定目的,但亦具有一些合理性.
Abstract
Arthur H.Smith,as a missionary to China,conducted extensive research on Chinese culture during his mission.In his view,the characteristics of Chinese culture are shaped by Confucianism,so analyzing the basic concepts of Confucianism can reflect the characteristics of Chinese culture.He analyzed the specific manifestations of"benevolence","rites","wisdom","trust",and"righteousness"among the Chinese people at that time,sketched out the"general outline"of the characteristics of Chinese culture,and then proposed a"prescription"for transforming Chinese culture-using Christian civilization to help the Chinese people with a"unparalleled past"to"correct mistakes"and create a"better future".Although Arthur H.Smith's thoughts are based on a Christian standpoint and have some prejudices,they also have some reasonable contents.
