Robotic solutions to the aging problems follow an obvious utilitarian terms, but the calculation of costs and benefits in the context of elderly care is extremely complex. From a perspective of Confucian role ethics, this study will take the relationships as the starting point to examine the diversified scenarios of using robots for elderly care, with an aim to make a systematic ethical evaluation of care robots. This paper will argue that the development of care robots faces a key choice:whether to let robots replace humans to fulfill the social roles that should be assumed by humans,or to integrate robots into human moral practice by letting them merely play assistive roles.
