Role of amygdala in the regulation of anxiety-like sleep disorders
Anxiety and sleep disorder are related to each other in a bidirectional way;generally, sleep disor-ders cause anxiety and people suffering from anxiety disorders experience insomnia and sleep fragmentation. The basolateral and central amygdala project to the nuclei involved in the regulation of sleep-wake states, thus playing a key role in regulating anxiety-like behavior and sleep disturbance. In this review,we summarized the anatomic structure and fiber connections of amygdalae, and their mechanisms and neural circuits that act on anxiety-like behavior and sleep disturbance so as to provide new insight into the interaction between anxiety and sleep, and come up with fundamental theories for anxiety and sleep disorder treatment.
