Identification of and investigation into composition differences of terpenoids in Gardenia jasminoides Ellis and Gardenia jasmi-noides var.radicans Makino using liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer
Objective To develop a method for the high-throughput determination of terpenoids in Gardenia jasminoides Ellis and apply it in an investigation of composition differences between Gardenia jasminoides Eills and Gardenia jasminoides var.radicans Makino. Methods A high-throughput qualitation and quantifica-tion strategy was proposed for the terpenoids in Gardenia jasminoides Ellis by combining multiple techniques such as full scanning, product ion scanning, precursor ion monitoring, neutral loss ion scanning, multiple reac-tion monitoring, and dynamic multiple reaction ion monitoring in liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, the multivariate analysis methods such as principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis were further applied for investigating the composition differences. Results A total of 81 terpenoids were identified and relatively quantified in the present study. There was a sig-nificant difference in the content of terpenoids between Gardenia jasminoides Ellis and Gardenia jasminoides var.radicans Makino.Of them,13 different substances could be used as markers for distinguishing Gardenia jasminoides Ellis and Gardenia jasminoides var.radicans Makino. Conclusion The established method is con-venient and accurate, which provides a new idea for the identification and quality evaluation of gardenia, and provides a reference for the rational development and utilization of gardenia resources.
