Expression of basic fibroblast growth factor in rapid tooth movement
Objective To investigate the correlation between basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF)and the reconstruction of periodontal tissue on the tension side of the moving tooth during rapid tooth movement due to a reduction of resistance and distraction. Methods Twelve beagle dogs were divided into four groups according to the distraction for 5 days,10 days,15 days, retaining 90 days after distraction for 15 days, with three dogs in each group. The left and right sides in mandibular of each dog were randomly treated with two different procedures:reducing resistance and distraction,or conventional orthodontics. The second premolar of the mandible was extracted, and the third premolar(anchorage tooth)was used as an anchorage to move the first premolar(moving tooth). The reducing resistance and distraction group underwent alveolar septal reduction and distracted twice a day.The moving distance of the moving tooth and the anchorage tooth was measured at various time points.Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to observe the remodeling of the periodontal tissue and change in capillary density on the tension side of the moving tooth.Immunohisto-chemical staining was used to observe the changes in the average optical density of proliferating cell nucle-ar antigen and bFGF.Results During each stage of distraction, the moving distance of the moving tooth in the reducing resistance and distraction group was significantly increased compared to the conventional group(P<0.05),while there was no significant difference in the moving distance of the anchorage tooth(P>0.05).Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed that the periodontal tissue on the tension side of the resistance and distrac-tion group was remodeling more actively.During each stage of force application, the expression of bFGF in the periodontal tissue on the tension side of the reducing tension group was higher than that in the convention-al group(P<0.05),and there was no significant difference at 90 days(P>0.05).The trend of changes in capil-lary density and positive expression of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen in the periodontal tissue on the tension side of the moving tooth was nearly consistent with that of bFGF.Conclusion The rapid reconstruc-tion of periodontal tissue induced by reducing resistance and distraction might be related to the biological mechanisms of bFGF in promoting vascular proliferation, cell differentiation and bone remodeling.
