Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of cross Kirschner wire lateral tension band technique on patellar fracture. Methods The 21 patients with patellar fractures were treated with cross Kirschner wire lateral ten-sion band technique.Surgery condition, fracture healing time and knee activity were recorded.Pain VAS was used to e-valuate the pain of the affected knee.Lysholm score was used to evaluate the functional recovery of the affected knee. Results All patients were followed up for 6~20(10.5±2.4)months.The operative time was 35~55(42.0±8.2)min,and the intraoperative blood loss was 10~30(12.5±2.5)ml.All the incisions healed in one-stage,and there were no complications such as wound infection, fracture displacement, loosening and fracture of the internal fixation.Joint stiffness occurred in 1 patient at 1 month after operation. All fractures healed within 3~5 months.Six months af-ter surgery, the pain VAS was 0 point in 18 cases and 1~3 points in 3 cases.Lysholm score was used to evaluate the functional recovery of knee joint:13 cases were excellent,5 good,3 fair, and the excellent-good rate was 18/21.At the last follow-up,knee flexion was 115°~130°,hyperextension was 0°~5°,and all patients returned to normal gait. Conclusions The treatment of patellar fracture with cross Kirschner wire lateral tension band technique is simple, which can significantly improve the pain and function of the affected knee, with satisfactory clinical effect.
