Gender differences in readmission rates and influencing factors of psychiatric patients
Objective:To explore the gender differences in readmission rates and influencing factors of psychiatric patients.Method:We used administrative data from January 1,2009 to December 31,2018 in the Affiliated Brain Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University.Inpatients with diagnoses of schizophrenia, depressive disorder or bipolar disorder were included in this study.Cox proportional hazards regression was carried out to screen the influencing factors for patient readmission. Results:The readmission rates were higher in female patients than male patients(24.7%vs.22.6%,P<0.01).Having medical insurance and more previous admis-sions were risk factors of rehospitalization for both men and women(P<0.01).For men only, shorter length of stay and bipolar disorder increased risk of rehospitalization(P<0.01).For women only, being younger and higher Charlson comorbidity index score increased risk of rehospitalization(P<0.01).Conclusion:The read-mission rates were lower in male patients than female.Shorter length of stay and bipolar disorder were only sig-nificantly associated with an increased risk of readmission in men.Being younger and higher Charlson comorbidi-ty index score were only significantly associated with an increased risk of readmission in women.
