Expression levels of serum Hcy,FGF-22,and Gal-3 in adolescents with first-episode depression and their correlations with cognitive functions
Objective To explore the expression levels of serum homocysteine(Hcy),fibroblast growth factor-22(FGF-22),and galectin-3(Gal-3)in adolescents with first-episode depression and analyze their correlations with cognitive functions. Methods A total of 130 adolescents with first-episode depression were selected as research group and 130 healthy volunteers undergoing medical examination in the same term recruited as control group. The expression levels of serum Hcy,FGF-22,and Gal-3 were detected for both groups, depressive degrees and cognitive functions assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD-17)and Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)respectively.Patients were divided into mild-depression(n=41),moderate-depression(n=56),severe-depression(n=33),normal overall cognitive function(n=54),and impaired overall cognitive function(n=76)subgroup based on assessment results, overall cognitive impairment rate was calculated according to the ratio of the number of patients with cognitive impairment to the total number of people in the group. The correlations of serum Hcy,FGF-22,and Gal-3 expression level with the MoCA score were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis;the efficacy of serum Hcy,FGF-22,and Gal-3 expression level predicting overall cognitive impairment in adolescents with first-episode depression was analyzed using Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC)curve. Results The HAMD-17 score, overall cognitive impairment rate, and the expression levels of serum Hcy and Gal-3 were higher and MoCA and FGF-22 lower in research than control group(P<0.01).Overall cognitive impairment rate and the expression levels of serum Hcy and Gal-3 were higher in severe-than moderate-and mild-depression subgroup,so were those in moderate-than mild-depression subgroup;serum FGF-22 expression level was lower in severe-than moderate-and mild-depression subgroup,so was that in moderate-than mild-depression subgroup(P<0.05 or 0.01).Pearson correlation analysis showed that the MoCA score was negatively correlated with serum Hcy and Gal-3 expression level and positively with FGF-22(P<0.01).The expression levels of serum Hcy and Gal-3 were higher and FGF-22 was lower in impaired than normal overall cognitive function subgroup(P<0.01).ROC curve analysis showed that the areas under the curve of serum Hcy,FGF-22,Gal-3,and their combination predicting the occurrence of overall cognitive impairment in adolescents with first-episode depression were 0.662,0.738,0.817,and 0.871,respectively.Conclusion Serum Hcy,FGF-22,and Gal-3 are abnormally expressed in adolescents with first-episode depression, closely related to cognitive impairment, could be used as effective indexes predicting cognitive impairment, and the combined predictive value of the three is better.
