The relationship between stigma and quality of life in patients with bipolar disorder:the mediating effects of self-efficacy and social support
Objective To explore the mediating effects of self-efficacy and social support between stigma and quality of life in patients with bipolar disorder(BD).Methods Questionnaire surveys were conducted in 101 BD patients,the Chinese Version of Self-Stigma of Mental Illness Scale(SSMIS-C),General Self-Efficacy Scale(GSES),Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),and 36-item Short-Form Health Survey(SF-36)used to evaluate their stigma,self-efficacy,social support,and quality of life,respectively.The mediating effects of self-efficacy and social support between stigma and quality of life were analyzed in BD patients.Results The SSMIS-C,GSES,PSSS and SF-36 score of BD patients were(202.60±13.71),(22.69±4.10),(34.05±5.98)and(503.02±21.46),respectively.The SSMIS-C score was higher,GSES,PSSS and SF-36 were lower in patients with disease course more than 3 years than ones≤3(P<0.01).In BD patients,the GSES and PSSS score were negatively correlated with the SSMIS-C(P<0.01)and positively with SF-36(P<0.05).The mediation effect analysis indicated that the effect coefficient of stigma → quality of life was-0.480,stigma → self-efficacy → quality of life-0.053 and accounted for 8.18%of the total effect(-0.053/-0.648),the effect coefficient of stigma→ social support → quality of life was-0.080 and did 12.35%of the total effect(-0.080/-0.648),the effect coefficient of stigma → self-efficacy →social support → quality of life was-0.035 and did 5.40%of the total effect(-0.035/-0.648).The total mediating effect size was-0.168 and accounted for 25.93%of the total effect(-0.168/-0.648).Conclusion Self-efficacy and social support of BD patients have a mediating effect between stigma and quality of life,measures improving patients'self-efficacy and social support level can be considered so as to improve quality of life.
