The effect of group psychotherapy on male schizophrenia patients
Objective To explore the effect of group psychotherapy(GPT)on male schizophrenia patients.Methods Eighty male schizophrenics were divided into treatment and control group according to random number table,with 40 ones in each.Both groups received paliperidone hydrochloride treatment,treatment group was plus the GPT on the basis of medication.Both groups were treated for 8 weeks.Before and after treatment,such indexes were assessed for both groups using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS),Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale(ISMI),Self-Esteem Scale(SES),and Insight and Treatment Attitudes Questionnaire(ITAQ)as severity of symptoms,stigma,self-esteem levels,insight,and treatment attitude.Results After treatment,scores on the PANSS and ISMI in both groups were lower compared with pre-treatment and so were those in treatment than control group(P<0.01).After treatment,scores on the SES and ITAQ in both groups were higher compared with pre-treatment and so were those in treatment than controls(P<0.01).Conclusion The GPT plus medication has a definite effect in the treatment of male schizophrenics and is conducive to the recovery of social functions and cognitive improvement,which deserves clinical promotion.
