Clinical pathological analysis of 11 children with conjunctival cyst
Objective To study the histopathological characteristics of children with conjunctival cysts and the causes. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 11 children with conjunctival cyst who had surgery, whose age, gender, eye diseases, disease sites, and histopathological characteristics were collected. Results Eleven patients with conjunctival cysts(12 eyes),average age of(79.18±22.77)months.There were 8 males and 3 females,10 had a his-tory of extraocular muscle surgery, and 1 was a congenital cyst.Ten patients underwent HE staining,PAS staining and im-munohistochemical staining(MUC5AC,CK,D2-40),and one patient underwent transmission electron microscopy.HE staining showed that the inner wall of the cyst was flat epithelium or stratified epithelial tissue, and 2 cases were connected with muscle tissue.PAS staining was weakly positive in 3 cases and positive in 2 cases.Immunohistochemical staining:MUC5AC staining was weakly positive in 5 cases, and positive in 1 case;CK staining and D2-40 staining were 10,all were strongly positive.Lymphatic vessels with D2-40 staining was found in 1 case. Conclusions The inner wall cells of conjunc-tival cysts in children are more common in stratified columnar epithelium, which contain a small number of atypical goblet cells. They are similar to bulbar conjunctival epithelium, and the lymphatic vessels in cysts are rare. The specific source of the cyst fluid needs further research to determine.
