The relationship between the degree of myopia in children and adolescents and the thickness of choroid and ganglion cell-internal plexiform layer in macular fovea
Objective ObjectiveTo observe and analyze the correlation between the spherical equivalent(SE)in children and adolescents and the thickness of the foveal choroid layer(SFCT),the thickness of the retinal ganglion cell inner plexus layer(GCIPL),and the axial length(AL).Methods A retrospective study was conducted on children and adoles-cents aged 8 to 14 who visited the ophthalmology department of Puren Hospital in Beijing from January 2021 to July 2022.Atropine dilated pupil optometry was used to measure refractive power, and they were divided into the low myopia group(>-3 D and<-0.5 D),moderate myopia group(>-6 D and≤-3 D),high myopia group(≥-12 D and≤-6 D),and control group(>-0.5 D and less than 0.5 D)according to equivalent spherical(SE)power.SFCT and GCIPL thickness in six di-rections(upper,upper nasal, lower nasal, lower temporal, and upper temporal),GCIPL average thickness was measured.Minimum thickness,AL,evaluate its relationship with myopic diopter.GCIPL thickness and AL were analyzed using Spear-man correlation coefficients, while SFCT and AL were analyzed using generalized estimation equations. Results A total of 97 people(142 eyes)were included, including 47 males and 50 females, aged 11.2±1.8 years old.The analysis of the Spearman correlation coefficient between GCIPL thickness and AL,as well as the Spearman correlation coefficient between GCIPL thickness and AL,showed that all indicators of GCIPL thickness showed a significant negative correlation with AL(P<0.001).The upper, lower, lower temporal, and average thickness of GCIPL were significantly negatively correlated with age, while the other indicators were not significantly correlated with age.The results of the generalized estimation equa-tion show that the regression coefficient of AL was-24.846(Z=-4.522,P<0.001),indicating a significant negative impact of AL on SFCT.Conclusions The deeper the SE,the longer the AL,the thinner the SFCT,and the thinner the GCIPL in children and adolescents with myopia, and the most significant correlation between the degree of SE is below the GCIPL.
