Qualitative study of stigma in caregivers of children with epilepsy
Objective To understand deeply the experience,source and coping ways of stigma in caregivers of children with epilepsy,in order to provide references for formulating targeted intervention measures.Methods From January to December 2022,10 caregivers of children diagnosed with epilepsy in the pediatric diagnosis and treatment center of a grade A hospital in Changchun were selected by objective sampling method.Phenomenological research methods in qualitative study was used to conduct semi-structured interviews and live recording.The data was analyzed and themes was extracted by Colaizzi 7-step analysis method.Results The results of this study were divided into 3 themes and 9 subthemes,namely,stigma experience(guilty and self-blame,anxiety and depression,scare and fear);sources of stigma(relatives,friends and neighbors,schools and teachers,medical staff);stigma respond(concealment,avoidance,acceptance).Conclusion The caregivers of children with epilepsy have strong stigma.Medical staff should provide corresponding psychological support and intervention measures according to the source of their stigma,strengthen the publicity and popularization of disease knowledge,improve the caregivers'awareness of the disease,and enable them to cope with stigma correctly.
