Study on the mechanism of macrophages in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis
In recent years,atherosclerosis(AS)-induced cardiovascular disease has become the leading cause of mortality.AS is a chronic inflammatory disorder, pathologically defined by perturbed lipid metabolism and subendothelial foam cell deposition.Macrophages play important role in all stages of AS,the imbalance of their number and activation state is the key to the development of lesions, and excessive aggregation and activation will transform them from defensive role to pathogenic role. This article mainly elaborates the dual role of macrophages in AS and the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways involved, and discusses potential therapeutic strategies.Further exploring the key role of macrophages in AS pathogenesis may provide new solutions for the treatment of AS.
